  A triumphant night for the CBSO’s ‘King Kazuki’ CBSO at Symphony Hall ★★★★★ I doubt if the forthcoming coronation of King Charles III will be greeted with such spontaneous joy or the wholehearted embrace which greeted Kazuki Yamada as he was crowned as the CBSO’s new Chief Conductor and Artistic Advisor. The packed Symphony Hall audience overflowed with warmth towards the vibrant, bouncing good humoured man whom they have held in great affection since he became Principal Guest Conductor in 2018. At the end of an exhilarating concert we were engulfed in hundreds of black and white “CBSO” embossed balloons released from the ceiling – general genial mayhem ensued. The madcap bacchanalian atmosphere was entirely fitting following a dynamic performance of Carl Orff’s choral blockbuster ‘Carmina Burana’. Sinfonia of Birmingham at Pershore Abbey

SINFONIA OF BIRMINGHAM AND PERSHORE ABBEY -- A DREAM TEAM SINFONIA OF BIRMINGHAM Pershore Abbey **** Pershore is a gratifyingly parking-friendly town, with plenty of free spaces available to the visitor, not least in the vicinity of its magnificent Abbey. This splendid building chose the equally splendid Sinfonia of Birmingham to perform the first concert there since the beginning of the pandemic, and the atmosphere could not have been more welcoming. The programme was all-Nordic, yet both works were conceived on Mediterranean shores. Nielsen's Helios Overture, inspired by a visit to Greece,, sounded a little unwarmed-up at the outset, but soon settled under Michael Seal's wise, communicative and unextragavant baton. Seal balanced volume and detail with a sure sense of structural growth, securing an almost Russian sturdiness of sound at full chordal passages.   TRULY TERRIFIC TOSCA CBSO at Symphony Hall ★★★★★ Dramatic would be an understatement. Black drapes hung from ceiling to platform transforming Symphony Hall into a gigantic catafalque, over which loomed a gigantic cross formed from myriad lights. The CBSO players occupied every inch of space, they too in black, illuminated only by music stand lamps. Kazuki Yamada's baton stabs down incisively, the CBSO roars into life with menacing doom-laden chords saturated in percussion and brass. Seconds later the political fugitive Angelotti (Ashley Riches) is racing down the left stalls aisle and onto the platform desperately seeking refuge in the Church of Sant’ Andrea della Valle. Just under three hours later Tosca (Anna Patalong) takes her fatal plunge as the cross dazzles us with a blaze of pure white light. A capacity audience from stalls to the precipitous seats in the grand tier roar their approval of a superb performance that has gripped us throughout. In the 1950s professor of music...
